What We’ll Do — Trekking at Su Gorropu Gorge

In Italy’s deepest canyon, where nature speaks in silence

Power of nature, absolute silence, authentic emotions.

Imagine walking between rock walls up to 500 meters high, while the sky narrows above you and the world seems suddenly far away. The sound of water flowing over the rocks, the flutter of swallows’ wings, and a solemn silence that envelops every step.

Welcome to Su Gorropu Gorge, in the wild heart of the Supramonte between Orosei and Dorgali. A primordial place where nature reigns supreme and every view is a photographic masterpiece.

We depart from Orosei or Dorgali in our Land Rover 4×4 vehicles. After a stretch on a dirt road, we leave the vehicle and start the trek: backpacks on, we cross the Rio Flumineddu and enter the Mediterranean scrub, among strawberry trees, ancient holm oaks, and the walls of Monte Oddeu.

Ahead of us, the imposing canyon opens up: huge white limestone boulders, seasonal waterfalls, hidden caves, and rare biodiversity. With a bit of luck, we may see golden eagles in flight, mouflons among the rocks, and unique species like the nuragic aquilegia, a botanical symbol of the gorge.

  • Trekking through the canyon's monumental walls
  • Natural silence among Europe’s most evocative landscapes
  • Rare and endemic flora and fauna
  • Iconic photographic locations in Sardinia
  • Traversing large boulders and rocky canyon passages
  • Streams, caves, and natural ponds
  • Panoramic break with packed lunch
  • Transfer by 4×4 vehicle

✨ Trekking Experience

The trail gradually becomes more adventurous: in some sections, we use our hands to climb over boulders shaped over millennia by the Rio Flumineddu. After about two hours of naturalistic observations and photography, we enjoy a well-deserved lunch break immersed in a majestic setting.

In the afternoon, we return retracing the canyon back to the 4×4 vehicles for a comfortable return to the starting point.
